How to measure your hand

Hold your hand flat and measure from the base of your palm, at the crease near your wrist, to the tip of your ring finger. Use a ruler or a tape measure and record the length in inches. Measure your dominant hand, the one that holds the paddle. If you land between two sizes, pick the smaller one and add an overgrip.

What grip circumference means

Grip size is the distance around the handle. Too small and your fingers dig into your palm, which adds tension. Too large and the handle feels like a baseball bat, which tires your forearm and slows your wrist. A comfortable grip lets your fingertips rest with a small gap and lets your hand stay relaxed.

Overgrips and finished size

An overgrip adds roughly 1/16 in to the handle, and some players use two. If you always play with an overgrip, size down one step so the finished handle lands where you want it. Replacement grips rebuild a compressed or slick base and give you a clean starting point before you wrap.

Questions about this calculator

How do I know my pickleball grip size?

Measure from the base of your palm to the tip of your ring finger. A length under 6.75 in points to a 4.0 in grip, 6.75 to 7.5 in points to 4.25 in, and above 7.5 in points to 4.5 in. This calculator does that conversion for you.

What grip size do most adults use?

The most common pickleball grip is 4.25 in, which matches a hand length near 7 in. Many players also like 4.0 in because it feels quick and lets them relax the hand. Fewer players need 4.5 in.

Does an overgrip change grip size?

Yes. An overgrip adds about 1/16 in to the handle, and two wraps add more. If you always play with one, start from the next size down so the finished handle matches your hand.

What if my hand is between two sizes?

Start with the smaller grip and add an overgrip. It is easier to build up a handle than to shrink it. You can fine-tune with the number of wraps until the handle feels right in your hand.

Can I make a grip smaller?

You cannot sand a pickleball handle down safely, but you can replace a thick grip with a thinner one. A replacement grip with less cushion can bring the handle closer to your hand. If it is still too big, a different paddle is the better fix.

How often should I replace my grip?

Replace an overgrip when it turns slick or shiny, often every few weeks for frequent players. Replace the base grip when it feels compressed, hard, or uneven. Fresh tack helps you hold the paddle loose, which eases arm tension.

Does grip size affect tennis elbow?

It can. A grip that is too small makes you squeeze harder, and a grip that is too large makes you grip tight to keep control. Either one adds forearm tension. A correct size lets your hand stay relaxed through the swing.
